Grofé wrote several original works during his tenure with Whiteman, including Mississippi Suite () and his best-known composition, Grand Canyon Suite (), from which the movement “On the Trail” became a jazz standard. After leaving Whiteman, Grofé formed his own orchestra, which often performed for radio.

Most significantly, it was not even an album of Cash’s music, rather a concept album consisting primarily of American composer Ferde Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite. Cash gives his tribute to Grofé in the conclusive track, an minute spoken word piece about a day at the Canyon/5(31).

Jan 10,  · Grand Canyon Suite (Ferde Grofe)--Andre Kostelanetz and His Orch. () I'd hate to commit myself to a favorite work of music, but Ferde Grofe's superb Grand Canyon Suite is a major contender. Once upon a time, and thanks to Toscanini taking on the work and making it an American concert staple, GCS was performed all the time.
