Capriccio for oboe and 11 string instruments belongs to the strictly avant-garde period in Penderecki’s output. He wrote it at the same time as the St. Luke Passion, most likely treating the Capriccio as a kind of repose from the struggle of writing that large-scale vocal-instrumental composition. The Capriccio was first performed at the Lucerne Festival in by the outstanding Swiss.

Krzysztof Penderecki is Poland’s leading contemporary composer and he stands at the forefront of modern music. In this program, recorded at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, one of Europe’s most prestigious concert venues, he conducts the Sinfonietta Cracovia in performances of four of his own works.

These pieces open this disc devoted to Penderecki’s music for string orchestra - with occasional wind soloists. The other work here from the s is the Capriccio for oboe and strings, which Richard Whitehouse’s informative booklet note refers to as evidence of the composer’s “lighter side” even in his avant garde days.

There’s a huge range of style in these works for smaller forces, from the baroque/romantic pastiche of Three Pieces in Old Style (based on a film score), through the avant-garde Intermezzo for 24 Strings and the amazingly virtuosic Capriccio for Oboe and String Orchestra, to the later, neo-romantic Serenade and two Sinfoniettas.

Penderecki: Piano Concerto 'Resurrection' Only recently has Krzysztof Penderecki turned to the piano as a solo instrument. The first sketches for this concerto were made in and had a lighter character, similar to his Capriccio for Violin and Orchestra.
