The Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 ('Midsummer Vigil') is one of his more well known works and justly so. The rhapsody combines the lyricism of Grieg with a fine, colorful orchestration. The piece sings along without great climaxes: it is simply a loosely connected set of theme variations. The Second Symphony shows more substance and fire/5(3).

Hugo Alfvén went straight to the heart of the Swedish folk tunes when he wrote his Midsummer Vigil, Swedish Rhapsody, op. 19 (), for a large orchestra - a festive work in the favourite rhapsodic form of Romanticism where one theme (character) succeeds another to create a varied musical narrative.
